His academic time is spent advocating for global perspectives in the education of young physicians, and as one of the founding editors of Canada's newest open-access medical journal, Open Medicine. Most recently, he has returned from Abyei, Sudan where he worked as a medical doctor for the humanitarian organization Medecins Sans Frontieres.

Dr. Maskalyk will spend an hour discussing the role of humanitarian assistance as he experienced it in Abyei, Sudan and through that, provide a broader context for one of the world's most complex contemporary stories. He will touch on the history of Sudan, of humanitarian intervention, and importantly, the personal trajectory one experiences during such a mission.
